Reading Between Reviews: Red vs Blue!

Have you ever wondered why we’re here?

Red vs Blue, the sci-fi/comedy/action/drama/machinima series that’s fourteen years old and still going strong, is a…unique series, for lack of a better word.  Initially starting as nothing more than a few guys who thought it would be cool to create a little comedic story using Halo, it grew into a huge series that kickstarted the company known as RoosterTeeth.  Spanning fourteen seasons, with a fifteenth to come this Sunday, I thought the opportunity couldn’t be better to review this massive web-series!

Because of just how long and unique this show is, I won’t be mentioning very specific details all of the time.  Rather, I’ll simply gloss over the big picture of what Red Vs Blue is, and what it attempts to do.  As a uniquely, surprisingly successful web series, it did a lot of things that can’t be defined very simply, and I’ll try and respect that, for better or worse!

Six of The Best Custom Games of Halo 3!

Halo 3 is one of those games that just give me good memories whenever I think of it.

Perhaps that’s just the nostalgia talking, but can you blame me?  It was an entertaining game in many ways!  We’re talking a campaign that is filled with memorable moments, multiplayer that was stupidly well designed, and, the topic of today, the Halo Forge, which allowed tons of creative ideas to flourish.

While Microsoft gave us Capture The Flag and Deathmatch, individual creators helped give birth to  Grifball, Speed Halo, Cops N’Robbers, and more.  Using the Forge, the theory was that you could create your own deathmatch maps, capture the flag maps, and more, but thanks to the creativity of gamers, we got a lot more than that.  Want to exploit the game to escape a prison?  Play Duck Hunt in Halo?  Or maybe play sumo with Ghosts and Warthogs?  You can do all that in more, in Custom Games that were simply a joy to play with friends.  And today, I just wanted to talk about some of the games that I had great times with. Five of the Best: First-Person Shooter Games!

Okay, being honest, I feel First-Person Shooters have received a bad rep, among game genres.

When you think of FPS games, odds are you don’t think much of the in-depth story, of the complex gameplay.  They have created controversy regarding violence, spawned the stereotype of the vulgar, angry 12 year old, and, honestly, tend to be perceived as very simplistic.  RPGs, Strategy, Adventure, Fighting, even Third Person Shooter games, considering Fallout and Mass Effect, have received far better reputations.

However- the FPS genre has a lot more going for it than bad stereotypes.

When done right, I firmly believe that the FPS games can excel in ways that other games simply cannot.  The intensity and quickness that FPS games provide makes for exciting gameplay to watch, interesting story-telling, as well as, of course, unique interactions with other players.  Despite the creation of toxicity at times, this communication with others has allowed for some great, great fun, something different than any other kind of video game.  For this countdown, I’ll talk about some of my favorite First Person Shooters, the ones that exemplify the best the genre has to offer.  The only rule here: just one entry per franchise is allowed.  That being said- let’s start it off!
